STYLE GURU STYLE: The Odd Couple

Fashion is all about taking risks. My personal endeavor into the clothing world began at age seven when I tailored a tank top for myself from a terrycloth bath towel, much to my mom’s surprise. Since then, I’ve slowly but surely adopted some revolutionary trends and even managed to wow my mom without ruining any household goods. Despite this adventurous spirit I have maintained one rule—my absolute truth—that I have stuck to through the years. That is, until now.

Ever since I can remember, I have been strongly against any combination of blue and back in a single outfit. It didn’t matter if the blue was a shade of navy, cerulean or powder; exceptions did not exist. You may disagree, and you may even laugh at how seriously I take this. And that’s totally fair, because I have begun to see the light.

I love every item of clothing I own, but recently I’ve wanted to shake up my style. So naturally, I dyed my hair blue. But I was still slightly unfulfilled. I wanted to further challenge myself. After viewing rag & bone’s fall ready-to-wear collection, I knew what I had to do.

This cool look from the collection inspired me to rethink my taboo against pairing blue and black. A trusty turtleneck and my go-to leather jacket helped to comfort me in embarking on this (stylish) journey. I paired the onyx top with a blue quilted leather skirt and added my denim jacket as well. While I encourage Fashionistas/os to be adventurous with the color palette of their outfits, in this case it is best to stick to black and blue to emphasize this combination. Finally, black leggings kept me warm and inky combat boots helped to adapt the runway look for everyday wear.

After overcoming this fashion fear, I now love wearing blue and black together in my outfits. Besides becoming aware of this awesome pairing, I also learned that the rule of fashion is that there are no rules—no combination is off limits. I plan to keep this in mind and further challenge my sense of style.

Incorporating a hot pink feather boa in a stylish ensemble, you ask? Well, that’s a whole different story.
