Ah, the ’60s—a time of psychedelia, Dr. Strangelove and tie-dye. Man stepped foot on the moon for the first time, and a British invasion occurred when the Beatles rose to popularity in the USA. The Rolling Stones couldn’t “get no satisfaction,” but Fashionistas of the ’60s definitely did by embracing the shift dress.
Shift dresses have stood the test of time for about 60 years, and are still popular today. A demure, simple and loose-fitting frock, shifts can be dressed up or down. It differs from other varieties of dresses for its angular silhouette and lack of an elastic waist. The shift may be fairly plain, but is considered a wardrobe stable for this exact reason. Shift dresses are made for all styles: flirty, regal, casual and even edgy. Or, if you’re Iggy Azaela, you may go with this “fancy” style for a night out.
This week’s Fashionista takes her shift to the street for a casual trip to Chinatown in New York City. She has paired her little black dress, or as Fashionistas/os affectionally call it, the LBD, with fun navy polka-dot tights. These bottoms and her heather gray socks keep her legs and feet warm in the cold weather. A fur trimmed jacket does the same for her top. In this outfit, coordination is key. This Fashionista has matched her onyx boots to her shift, putting emphasis on the dark dress. The navy tone of her leggings is also picked up by her beautiful, delicate jewelry.
What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “If you think it’s cute, wear it. Don’t think that you can’t pull something off or that a trend isn’t right for you.”
