STYLE GURU STYLE: Almost Famous

The Beatles once sang, “Penny Lane is in my ears and my eyes.” Well, now she is everywhere. Bohemian dress has made a major presence in the fashion arena. Each season countless designers recreate the magical dress of the 1970s by adding flair to the trend’s signature silhouettes. The Chloè fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection placed an emphasis on the free, folksy women of the era, right down to their middle parts. The collection features flowing hemlines that graze the floor, tassels for days and dainty floral prints juxtaposed with rocker edge. The designer’s take on bohemian-chic is up to date and refreshing giving the audience novel considerations.

Personally, I fell in love with bohemian dress after viewing Almost Famous. Penny ‘s style embodies freedom and creativity, two ideologies heavily prevalent in the ‘70s. Penny is a true bohemian queen. Her wardrobe consisted of lace crop tops, fur-collared coats, bellbottoms and lovely embroidered shirts. Who could forget those round oversized sunglasses, an accessory staple I have owned ever since? What I would do to raid Ms. Lane’s closet.

To recreate the looks showcased on the Chloè runway I started on the top. Lace is used quite often when piecing together a bohemian look. When I spotted this lace maxi from Free People I just about fainted. I normally don’t jump at white tops but this one was calling my name. The billowing trail was one I could not easily pass up. Underneath, I wore a simple black bralette to counter the soft colors and intricacy of the top.

My advice is to keep accessories to a minimum when dealing with a bold top. Small accessories add minor detail without clashing or taking away from a piece. This is the reason I opted for a small gold choker. It adds shine to my look without blinding it. On my feet, I wore a pair of black and tan boots with an ankle strap. I really admire the heel-cutout trend that has been popular with boots. Who knew that revealing some heel could add dimension to a look? Of course, I top the look off with a pair of round sunglasses much too large for my face.
