STYLE GURU STYLE: Invest In A Vest

The Betsey Johnson fall 2014 ready-to-wear runway show embodies how adding a vest to any outfit can be playful and spunky. They add personality to the models’ outfits, and show that they come in a range of fun styles and patterns. Vests are versatile for any season because they come in a range of fabrics, and they’re the perfect standout accessory! Although it’s not the season for fur, it is the season for a different kind of vest.

Once upon a time, a boy asked me what was up with me because I hadn’t worn anything lace that day he saw me. Yes, a boy noticed what I was wearing, a.k.a. lace has always been a staple in my closet. It’s the three F’s every woman should strive for: fun, flirty and feminine. White is such a classic and pure color, and it goes with just about anything and everything. I’ve also always been on the hunt for the perfect summer vest after seeing how incredible Julianne Hough looked while wearing one in Footloose, and finally, my dream vest has been found. It has my favorite lace style, while also embodying a West coast aura. Every time I put it on, I can hear the bonfire screaming my name.

Since North Carolina usually likes to go straight from winter to spring in the average season, my summer vest gets to start its run in March. Vests are the perfect way to spice up your outfit. Instead of just donning a plain tank top and denim, you get to add another layer that adds character and style. I always choose lace vests because of how beautiful the crochet details are, but even just simple vests in a variety of colors and styles can do wonders for an outfit. It’s always best to pair it with a very plain and simple tank top underneath and denim, but the rest is up to you. It tells a lot about a person based on what style of vest they wear.

This week, I did exactly that. I wore the simplest black cami that I’ve probably ever owned, and tucked it into a pair of light-wash denim jeans. If it hadn’t been for the fact that it was cooler this early in the morning, I would’ve preferred to wear a pair of high-waist denim shorts and cowgirl boots. My gold Jack Rogers add some shine to the look, but since I went with black and white for the entire ensemble, any color would do the outfit justice. I threw on the lace vest, and as you can see, it adds personality to the outfit. Without it, it would’ve been a pretty boring style choice, but the addition makes it trendy and flirty. The detail is so gorgeously meticulous, and it goes all around from front to back. It takes this look from boho, to boho chic. I’ll always thank you, Julianne Hough.
