Lately I have found myself in a creative rut. As counter intuitive as it might seem, I have discovered the best way to dig myself out of this rut is to push my boundaries and exit my comfort zone. If I had to describe my everyday go-to style I would say that it’s a mix of quirky, girlie layering with a general “artsy” vibe. That is why I chose to draw inspiration for my outfit from the 3.1 Phillip Lim fall 2014 ready-to-wear show. It’s a complete 360 from what I would regularly choose to wear. I love how a slightly goth vibe is sprinkled throughout the nontraditional shapes and unique layering of this show. A myriad of textures, varying lengths of dresses, jackets, shirts and a solid color palette all make this show a dream to push those boundaries.
All the looks in Lim’s fall show were stunning, but I was especially taken by look 23. What I especially loved from this look was the cohesive color palette of gray, black and wine red and the overall minimalist makeup the model sported, minus a bold red lip. Lim’s show mainly consisted of structured jackets mixed with fluid tops and dresses. The best way to exist the comfort zone and pull off this look is to ask the question “what unique shapes and fluid tops can I pair with a structured jacket?” This is really what makes the look come together. The next step is to ensure that the pieces you choose to wear are all within the color palette used by Lim. I chose to wear a flowing peasant top in black, a gray textured moto jacket, ripped jeans and wine red combat boots. To complete the look, I wore a red lip in a similar tone to my red combat boots.
Crawling out of a creative rut shouldn’t be dreadful; if anything it should be an adventure. Exiting your comfort zone takes bravery, but it’s so worth while. Edgy and unique, this look is perfect when you find yourself uninspired by the same old looks. Perfect to wear out to a concert, or for a night on the town, structured pieces paired with fluid ones make for a wearable “everyday gothic” look. Add a red lip, and suddenly that creative rut will just be a memory of the past. I’m looking forward to using other looks from this show to help me push the envelope on my style, and exit the comfort zone.
