Mixing prints can be scary. Style bloggers do it like it’s nothing and create amazing outfits with wild prints and patterns. Yet when it comes down to just you and your closet, things aren’t that simple. Luckily, Trina Turk’s fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection offers multiple ways to combine even the boldest patterns and come out unscathed. She mixes patterns like it’s child’s play and makes it look easy to build a beautiful look from a variety of prints and colors.
I was so pleased by the colorful concoctions Turk sent down the runway that I knew I had to replicate them somehow. My main goal was to make sure I combined enough patterns to imitate Turk’s show without crossing the line into tacky territory. I began with a basic black top and a neon watercolor flare skirt. The print on this skirt is bright and eye-catching. I used the black shirt to balance out the different colors and tie everything together.
Turk uses leopard print in multiple looks in her collection. To pay tribute to this element, I threw on this awesome leopard bomber jacket. The pink in the jacket connects with the pink in the skirt. The coat’s retro style is another ode to Turk, since her show had a strong vintage feel to it.
I included even more leopard with my pointed flats. These are perfect because they work nicely with the jacket and help to ensure that the outfit still looks classy. In this case, I think that the leopard in the shoes really does work as a neutral, since it balances out the colors above. I also wore a pair of dream catcher earrings. They add a bit of bling without overpowering the rest of the outfit.
Turk’s designs were a huge source of inspiration for me. They made me think of the saying “YOLO.” It may be silly statement, but it seems like an apt message for Turk’s show. You only live once, so why not have fun with fashion and try new things?
