The spring 2015 J.Crew ready-to-wear collection can be best described as utilitarian-chic and basically everything a woman could ever need with regards to her wardrobe. This arrangement screams efficient and definitely would not fail in the conquering of a hectic work week. Every look had me gushing over their unique layering and flowy utilitarian jackets that hugged in all of the right places. I had to try and transform this look into my everyday class wardrobe.
I like to classify myself as a lover of the famed utilitarian jacket. Being a piece that is way too easy to throw on when the alarm clock does not quite go off on time, I tend to use my army green jacket quite frequently in my daily look. It is such a dynamic layering piece, one that brings power and sophistication to any ensemble. J.Crew was able to style theirs in an artistically tasteful and delicate manner, adding a dimension with the flowy layers that exist beneath the sharp edges of the utilitarian jacket.
While some of these looks might not necessarily make it to the campus catwalk any time soon, I decided to try my own variation of the utilitarian jacket while also paying tribute to my comfy-chic style. Since I knew I would be layering another jacket on top, I opted for a jade-green tank to keep the layering low-key underneath my utilitarian jacket. I chose a lighter scarf with floral detailing to frame the lining of the jacket, giving it that flowy look that was present in the J. Crew version. I added my most coveted moto skinnies to the look, bringing some edginess into the mix and also giving me that level of comfort that will get me through a day of classes. My white Converse seemed to best suit the playful vibe that usually accompanies my comfy looks and serves me best when I have to run around campus like a mad-man most days.
The utilitarian jacket is an essential to anyone who likes to change up their style day to day. It can toughen up a simpler look or be the standout piece in your ensemble with your favorite skinny jeans and sneakers.
