AROUND TOWN: F3 Showcase

Tatyana Alford, senior at Pepperdine University, started Free for All Fashion Society this spring semester. She has created her own fashion line, Reir Breed, that is based on sustainable clothing. This is the first fashion show at Pepperdine university that is hosted by a club on campus. Read on for what to expect for this upcoming event.

Name: Tatyana Alford

Role: Free for All Fashion Society (F3) President

CollegeFashionista: What made you want to start a fashion club on campus?

Tatyana Alford: I really wanted my future to be based in the creative side of fashion, but I wasn’t receiving enough support in that area from our campus career center. Our school was very good with providing opportunities in accounting, and things of that nature, but fashion was not a focus. I knew I couldn’t be alone in wanting to pursue fashion. So, I wanted to create opportunities for myself as well as other students to work directly with both creative and business aspects of fashion.

CF: What is the purpose for the showcase?

TA: The purpose is to expose students to the works and expression of other students. I honestly feel as students, we are missing out on mediums of expression, and this gives us a channel. We want to feature design, art, dance and many other forms of expression, with a main focus on fashion.

CF: Who are some of your favorite designers and why?

TA: That’s a tough question to answer. Right now I’m obsessed with the shifts in menswear, and the importance of street wear, but my favorite designers to stalk include David Hart and Public School. I love the waves that they’re making in menswear. For women’s wear, I love Sonia Rykiel.

CF: What are some of the upcoming trends you see for the year to come?

TA: Well, right now, I’m seeing shift to the ’70s with fringe, and the types of colors in the lines from NYFW. But I think into the future, we’ll be seeing quite a bit more androgyny in clothing, with just feminine touches on menswear and vice versa.

CF: What are some major events coming up for your club?

TA: We are going to be holding our first annual fashion showcase. The theme this year is sustainable expression. We were thinking about it for a while, and we were discussing how students are missing an outlet to express themselves on campus. We felt that it would be cool if we could combine student expression with sustainability, something we’re striving for as a population. We’ll have really awesome stages, with recycled materials used for centerpieces, and little nuances like that.

CF: What are some aspects that viewers can expect at this year’s showcase?

TA: You can expect some awesome fashion from student designers, and some awesome expression from student performers. It’s honestly going to be an expression overload, and we’re passing along that kind of expression to our audience members, with canvases and paint available near our sets. We want everyone to be able to express.
