STYLE GURU STYLE: On The Grid

If one message was clear from the pre-fall 2015 runways, it’s that graphic prints need to be in your wardrobe—like, right now. Derek Lam’s pre-fall 2015 collection was chock full of intersecting clean lines to create the bold, windowpane print. Complemented by a neutral color palette, Lam’s collection was wholly simple, elegant and modern.

Inspired by pre-fall’s attention to geometry, I gave the graphic trend a try. I opted for a shirtdress in a windowpane print as the focus of my look. There’s just something so effortless in taking a page out of the menswear book, as this oversized shirt lends a laidback feel to this modern print.

Following Lam’s aesthetic, I kept the color palette to shades of black, white and gray. These leather cutout booties create bold contrast while adding structural detail to the graphic print. I wore a gray Panama hat—which happens to be one of my absolute favorite spring accessories—to add a little cool femininity. To finish off the look, I wore my mom’s vintage Coach backpack. I will forever be obsessed with the bag’s classic design, making it the perfect accent to this laid back meets structured look.

My biggest takeaway from Derek Lam’s pre-fall show was the elegance of a neutral, graphic print outfit. A simple color palette sends a bold pattern like windowpane to be the focal point of the look. Channel this minimalist style all spring and summer long with clean lines, subtle accessories and dainty details.
