STYLE GURU STYLE: Runway Safari

Zuhair Murad’s resort 2015 show was inspired by a high fashion safari. The subtle nods to animal print and khaki outfits were a fresh spin on the sometimes over the top jungle theme. A major technique in this collection was the use of cutouts and mesh to create transparent mosaics. These were done in many different colors and prints to complement the body and draw the eye in.

My favorite part about this collection was the contrast between the black and white. Many designers choose to showcase this combo, but the safari inspiration was a new take on the classic look. The pair of looks that most inspired me was this duo. The black and white combined with the crisscross patchwork is reminiscent of a zebra’s stripes. The mesh in between the triangles makes it look like the garment is floating on the body, creating an interesting texture. The strappy shoes also seem inspired by a zebra.

I decided to use the essence of these looks to put together an outfit that would be perfect for a weekend lunch or even for class. My white top has a black crisscross detail that mimics the cutouts on the original look. The back of the shirt is also chiffon, which is similar to the transparent mesh featured on the runway. I chose to pair it with my black skinny jeans, which are a closet staple. To add to the stylized zebra theme, I am wearing my ballerina flats. The ankle strap makes them look like real ballet shoes while also referencing the strappy heels on the model.

Get My Look: 1. A white shirt with black lines. 2. Black skinny jeans. 3. Black ballerina flats.
