STYLE GURU STYLE : Machu Poncho

I love a trend that almost comes across as a risk and pieces that only a few Fashionistas can pull off. (That’s what I have been told when wearing this particular piece.) When you hear people talk about ponchos, they are usually talking about the big plastic covering you wear when its raining at a football game. But according to Barbara Bui’s fall 2014 ready-to-wear collection, they are anything but that. The designer draped the models in statement ponchos, oversized turtlenecks (my all time favorite) and bold prints that contributed to the overall aesthetic of the show.

Channeling my inner Barbara (minus the overly exotic fur), I chose a dark beige knit poncho with fringe. Instead of using the neutral color as my base, a plaid flannel served as both the detail print and bottom layer of the top of my outfit. While I loved the runway show, Bui’s head to toe ivory ensembles were a little too much for me. So I decided to take her use of the poncho and add my own pop of color to the outfit. I also love this trend for the colder spring days because I’m so comfortable throughout the day, but if I get too warm I can easily take it off. So basically ponchos are a lightweight jacket’s cuter cousin.

For me, the presence of color in an outfit is super important. Since the poncho covered a majority of the flannel, I wanted to incorporate some more color in my look. Red is my all-time favorite color so when I came across these super bright sneakers, I didn’t even have to think twice about getting them. The red coloring in the flannel is brought out by the shoes. If I had chosen a neutral shoe, there would virtually be no color to the outfit. Color is a great addition to any outfit and can really take your look to the next level.

Get My Look: 1. A fringe, knit poncho. 2. A Ralph Lauren flannel. 3. Bold Superga red sneakers.
