Every now and then I like to revisit some of my old outfits for inspiration. Most of the time I find myself cringing as I think, “What was I wearing?” As horrific as some of my past outfits may be, scrolling through your old blog archives is a great way to see how your style has evolved. Along with the occasional blog sweep, I love checking Style.com archives when I’m in an inspiration rut. Besides, with so many designers and seasons to keep track of, reviewing old collections is a mind refresher.
As I was scrolling through the Alexander Wang collections, I happened upon one of my favorite collections of all time. Alexander Wang’s spring 2013 ready-to-wear collection was a beauty. Released in fall of 2012, I was still in the midst of dreaming about prom dresses and I was convinced I would do anything to wear one of the laser-cut dresses to prom. In the end my mother won out and I wore a typical floor-length gown, but I still dream about this collection.
When I saw this dress sitting on the sales rack at Urban Outfitters along with more than half a dozen replicas, I knew I had hit the jackpot. With a low price tag and a design that was almost an exact copy of the original Alexander Wang collection, I couldn’t pass it up. However, the futuristic vibe of the dress made it hard to style and unfortunately it sat in my closet for quite awhile.
Fast forward to today and I’ve grown to love this dress. It’s certainly a statement all by itself with its mesh panels and cutout details. I paired it with my worn in Dr. Martens to keep the look grounded and redirect the focus to the dress.
Just because something is old doesn’t mean it’s not good anymore. Taking inspiration from old collections and outfits is a great way to learn from your mistakes. The possibilities are endless!
