My name is Kelly Henderson, and I am a Style Guru for the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. I am a rising senior at the university as well as a member of the university’s honors program and varsity women’s soccer team.
My freshmen year of college, I came upon a quote by Ralph Lauren that has rung true with me ever since. It states: “Style is very personal. It has nothing to do with fashion. Fashion is over quickly. Style is forever.” As a naturally more reserved individual, fashion has allowed me to show my inner eye for creativity and my adventurous spirit. It is my personal way of self-expression. In the past, my friends and family have described my fashion as “colorful yet sophisticated,” “preppy yet shabby-chic,” “a prep by day, a trendy, cool, force to be reckoned with by night.” However, I have never felt that my style could be placed into such a single box. While I may come off as quiet and small to others, my style and personality is big and unyielding. Each day, what I wear and how I wear it conveys a message of who I want to be and what I want to accomplish for that day.
Additionally, one of the most exhilarating parts of fashion for me is finding the new, up-and-coming fad and adapting it to my personal style or making that unknown designer a favorite amongst my friends. Since D.C. is filled with hipster brunch spots and trendy rooftop bars, I anticipate discovering a plethora of fashion-forward individuals who will open my mind to fads and fashion styles I may have never thought to try.
As the sweltering summer heat of D.C. begins to set in, headbands, sunglasses and dresses will be definite staples in my daily wardrobe. Also, I recently purchased a pair of sunflower Vans that will be the perfect shoe to adventure throughout D.C. with a fun, summer twist!
The outfit I am wearing features a dress with a four-layered South Moon Under choker necklace. The sunglasses are a favorite of mine, as well, since they give me that Audrey Hepburn-like look, and they make every outfit I wear absolutely fabulous.
I am super excited to be a part of the Style Guru team and cannot wait to discover all the hidden gems and unknown trends throughout the District this summer!
