Hello to all Fashionistas/os out there! I’ll be representing the phenomenal Skidmore College as a Style Guru this summer. To tell you a little bit about me, I’m a double major in Gender Studies and Religious Studies, and I am coming up on my final year. My favorite things are online shopping, feminism, quotes, photography, Diet Coke, my four dogs and my quirky family. I have no idea what I want to be when I grow up.
However, I am a Southerner through and through. Being raised in the South and moving to upstate New York for college put me through a little bit of a shock. Outside of the preference for Pepsi, the absence of Alabama football and the abundance of snowstorms, I found myself falling in love with the people of Skidmore. In high school I felt as though I never fit in, at Skidmore I felt constantly inspired by students and professors.
At Skidmore, there is so much beauty in the way people express themselves in order to tell their stories. Carrying my camera around has allowed me a chance to tell those stories, and fashion is one of the best stories ever told. What people wear and why they wear it can tell you so much about who they are, and a photograph can share that story in a single shot.
Across different races, classes, cultures, genders, sexualities and sizes, fashion is a public way of telling the world who you are. Fashion is a form of self-expression, self-love, and self-confidence, an important way to share your story. This summer, I am so excited to share what fashion means to me; who and what inspires me. I’m equally excited to be surrounded by Fashionista/os, people who have already shown me new ways to put together my summer wardrobe just by look at their STYLE GURU BIOs!
In my closet, you’ll find bright prints, tulle, bold lipstick, flower crowns, crop tops and patterned flats (I always believed that I’d become a grown up and just know how to walk in heels, but it never happened). Fun fact: I do not own any jeans, so outside of one pair of shorts, you will never see denim on me.
I have Coco Chanel’s words, “In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different” hanging up on my wall. This summer, I cannot wait to show you style that I find irreplaceable, especially style that colors outside of the lines.
