When it comes to interviews (and almost anything in life), first impressions are everything. As much as we don’t want to admit it, clothing can greatly define these first impressions. The second you walk into an employer’s office, he or she has already up-downed you two or three times. No matter how prepared you can be for the interview, if you don’t look the part, you may not make the cut.
My golden rule about interviews is to always lead with a classic look and give it hints of your personal flare. Always spice it up, but never overdo it. I allow myself one or two statement pieces to amp up my look. Whether I add eye-catching earrings or a bold watch, I never go overboard. You want to show the interviewer that you know how to incorporate your personal style into their wardrobe expectations.
This Fashionisto’s interview ensemble caught my eye because he made the right parts of his outfit pop. By pairing a soft neutral, a patterned pant and bold button-down underneath, he was able to successfully create a look that was both widely-known and completely his own. The mixture of patterns is absolutely acceptable because they are simply accents to the sweater. The button-down gives a pop of color to the outfit, while the pants give dimension to the look as a whole. This look tells the interviewer that he is smart, well prepared and ready to take on the world (or the office, at least).
One Simple Change: Going out for drinks with the guys to celebrate the new job? Simply switch out the patterned button-down for a neutral polo shirt and you’re good to go!
