STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Back in Black (and White)

For me, an important aspect of my outfit focuses on how the colors I am wearing correspond with one another. At one point or another we have all been guilty of putting together an outfit in our heads that seems aesthetically pleasing, but when actually implemented yields the opposite effect. The ensemble just does not work for some reason and the cause is usually a clash of colors. Some colors may be too close in shade to one another or just too vibrant. Although there is the color wheel method to making sure that the colors in an outfit work, I believe there is an easier alternative.

Many high-end fashion brands such as Alexander Wang, Y-3 and Public School are very successful due to their heavy focus on black and white pieces. Y-3’s iconic Qasa Racer’s always seem to be offered in a predominantly black or white-based silhouette that fly off shelves, and Comme des Garçons‘ black Play T-shirts are always in high demand. Even more accessible brands such as Zara and H&M are beginning to catch on to this classic trend.

As for really trying to implement this style tip, this Fashionisto is being complex, but casual at the same time with his outfit. The button-up shows that he is going for a more formal look, but not too formal as his button-down splits to reveal a white T-shirt. This provides a good color balance above the waist. Below the waist, he achieves the same effect with a pair of black shorts and a white pair of sneakers. This balance gives a sharp and edgy look to the Fashionisto. To top it all off, his accessories add touches of his outfit where the clothing does not reach. The watch and sunglasses really add the final layer of sophistication. Remember, start out simple and build your way up to more layered and complex getups as you become more comfortable with this classic color scheme.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “My main goal is to dispel the idea that black and white are a boring and banal color combination for an outfit because it can convey sophistication and sleekness in the most simple and intricate outfits.”
