STYLE GURU STYLE: All-White is Alright

Up until recently, all-white, monochromatic outfits have been seen as fashion faux pas. But what’s in the past is in the past! Multiple runway designer collections from spring 2015 Fashion Week featured simple, entirely white outfits, including the DKNY runway show. The show closed with multiple all-white ensembles including a sporty look which is another huge trend we are seeing a lot of this year, along with a couple of feminine, more regal looks as finale pieces.  These looks are all beautiful, all-white, and all in for this upcoming season! Lucky for all of us, this is a look that can easily be incorporated into our own wardrobes!

The problem with wearing white previously has been when in the year it’s acceptable to wear (after Memorial Day, but before Labor Day). But now the issue is more of how you style the monochromatic trend rather than when you are “allowed” to wear it.  There are two key things that you must focus on in order to make this look work on you: fit and diversity. White is one of the, shall we say, less forgiving colors out there. That is why fit is key when trying out this trend. Pieces should fit well, but not too tight in order to achieve the most flattering result. And finally, diversity. Diversity in texture, shape and shade can all create visual interest in an outfit, especially one that is primarily monochromatic. Adding multiple shades of white as well as incorporating different textiles into the outfit helps to break up the single-toned look of the trend. Layering pieces can also help with adding visual interest to the outfit. And remember, accessorize. The smallest details, whether it be a pop of color in the shoe or a simple choker at the neck can transform an outfit. If you are uncomfortable going all in, try adding a piece with a subtle pattern like these J Brand skinny jeans!

I took this runway look to a far more casual, everyday level. These One Teaspoon high-waisted shorts have a great boyfriend fit and amazing matte black hardware. I also paired a Brandy Melville short-sleeved T-shirt with a Michael Stars muscle tank to give the outfit that layered and relaxed look. I topped the outfit off with my favorite Helmut Lang summer knit which adds some diversity in texture. To add some polish I accessorized with my Free People black distressed booties and a gold layered necklace. So get out there Fashionistas/os and take runway to the streets!
