Nah, I don’t want that. Floral print—no way. Crop tops—never. How many of you walk past a store display, stare at the mannequins and have jumbled ideas running through your head? Well, I’m right there with you ladies and gentleman. Some of us either admire the outfits, while others walk away in disgust. Fortunately, that is not the case with stripes. Stripes have been a true “epidemic” over the past 150 years or so. From Charlie Chaplin’s signature hat and striped outfit to the famous book Where’s Waldo? and its known trend for Waldo’s stripes. At least three out of the ten people who you see walking on the street are wearing some kind of stripe.
Believe it or not, stripes first started out in the 1300s when “a cobbler in the French town of Rouen was condemned to death because, according to the local archives, he “had been caught in striped clothes” (The Devil’s Cloth). They believed it to be clothing that the Devil wore. How devious is that? So you are technically a bad-a** trendsetter wearing stripes, except that in today’s day and time, you obviously don’t get in trouble for it.
Rain or shine, this Fashionista believed in being trendy regardless of the weather. She paired a classic white pair of Hollister Co. jeans with an Express, half-sleeved shirt that embodies the horizontal stripes. Stripes with a solid color are always a good duo. Stripes stand out because it creates an illusion of ying and yang. The black and white, both opposite colors, complement each other. The Fashionista showed a little bit of skin on her shoulders which allowed them to look more defined. The gold fringe-like statement necklace adds a pop of color, contrasted with a pair of New York & Company maroon flats. The best accent with her stripes was her wide smile!
What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Make white jeans a staple in your wardrobe. It is so easy to put together an outfit with them because all you need is a shirt that adds a pop of color and some fun accessories.”
