Oddly, it took a recent trip to Nashville for me to say that I have visited the Frist Center for the Visual Arts—finally. This summer, Italian fashion reigns at the Frist with the exhibition of “Italian Style: Fashion since 1945,” a collection of Moschino’s satirical work, Ferragamo’s influence on Hepburn and Italian designed pieces that were prominent in Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball.
Call it the Met Gala on a smaller scale, but museum goers sported their best outfits—interpretations of the exhibit itself. In other words, imagine Roman Holiday translated to 2015. However, I decided for a more modern exhibition and channeled Rebecca Minkoff’s resort 2016 runway show, which took elements of old Hollywood and added a dose of attitude. Bold patterns with metallic skirts highlight the collection, and chunky heels adorn the models’ feet.
This outfit works perfectly at a museum where one should present his or herself in a fashion-forward manner. My Vera Wang blouse maintains a conservative air, but the pattern and my ivory skirt, both of which are inspiration from Minkoff, prevent me from transforming into a character from Little House on the Prairie. I added my personal touch to what the Minkoff models sported by wearing a simple, gold chain necklace. The necklace adds a tough vibe to any polished look, plus it matches my statement clutch.
Between interning and studying abroad this summer, take the time to dress up for a formal event. After all, a night at the museum never hurt anyone—not even Ben Stiller.
