“Mother knows best!” How many times have you heard that one? It’s the classic line that moms gladly deliver, shutting down any dispute you may have. *Enter teen angst, eye rolling and stomping away.* But we’re in college, guys, and it’s time to admit that most of the time she was right. And in the midst of a ’90s fashion revival, she’s now proven to be right about the one thing we never thought she would be: Mom Jeans.
Oh, yeah. They’re back and have daughters everywhere sticking their foot in their mouth. I’ve been a long-time lover of all things high-waisted and mom jeans are no exception. As time goes on, more of our parents’ decisions begin to make sense, this trend being one of them. They’re comfortable, versatile, and easy to wear, which explains why moms of the ’90’s loved them—they’re smart!
The way this Fashionista (the “Her” from Wardrobe of Her) has styled her denim takes the classic “jeans and a T-shirt” look up a notch. It’s casual enough for a day out shopping but is still cool enough to turn heads. Her jeans are in a nice stone-washed shade of denim and come pre-cuffed, which is definitely reminiscent of the good ole days. However, the slim cut modernizes the look enough to where people aren’t wondering if you just hitched a ride in Marty McFly’s DeLorean.
Birkenstocks are another ’90s look that this Fashionista brings to the table. I must admit that at the very dawn of this trend, I almost cried because I hated them so much. I told myself I’d stay strong and never give in, but I’m happy to say that I’ve finally seen the light and this Fashionista absolutely rocks the sandal. This brings the score to ’90s Moms: 2, ’90s Kids: 0. These sandals allow us normal human beings to achieve the off-duty model look while being completely comfortable. These sandals are a really nice, ergonomic break from trying to balance on six-inch stilettos! However, if you’re not totally willing to drop a Benjamin on this trend, you can find a more affordable version like this Fashionista’s here.
With a basic white Zara crop top (similar here), this Fashionista shows of a little midriff and her summer tan. She tops off her look with a chic pair of black Ray-Bans and a pop of color on her lips, tying the entire outfit together.
How To: The mom jean is so easy to wear and looks great with nearly any top. If you aren’t a fan of crop tops, throw on a basic cotton button-up blouse and do a half-tuck in the front to show off the high-waistline. It’s hard to go wrong when you have your mother’s stamp of approval! So there you have it, fellow Fashionistas! Get out there and make your momma proud!
