When I moved to New York City, the first thing I noticed was the difference in wardrobe color schemes. Everyone around me was wearing tones of white, black or gray, and not much color was to be seen. I was raised in Texas, and in the South, people tend to love color (especially in the spring and summertime). So, although I tend to stick to the neutrals in New York, it’s quite refreshing to come home to an explosion of color and big hair.
I spotted this Fashionista walking along her college campus in a beautiful paisley blue and green summer dress with a brown backpack complementing her brown sandals. What really struck my eye though, was her penny necklace and chunky turquoise beaded bracelet with a bronze pendant branded with the letter “C”. These two unique statement pieces just screamed “Southern Belle” and I instantly wanted to know more about them. When I asked her where she had purchased them, she said that she had found a “cute, little hole-in-the-wall jewelry store in Brenham, Texas.” She then proceeded to mention her avoidance of chain stores because her value of originality exceeds her need for a low price. If you look closely at her bracelet, you will notice that there is a conveniently placed clasp on each side that gives you the ability to change the pendant. These accessories could be worn with really anything— they can be used to complement intricate attire, or can complete a more plan outfit.
To accentuate her brown accessories, this Fashionista used gold and brown eyeshadow to make her face radiant and bronzy. The winged top liner adds a very dramatic element to the whole ensemble.
How To: If you want to achieve this sweet Southern Belle look, choose a detailed and colorful dress or skirt. As for my general word of advice, because I believe think that buying outfit pieces should be an adventure, next time you walk by that little “hole-in-the-wall-shop”, maybe you should check it out. After all, you could find eye-catching pieces like these that are hard to find anywhere else.
