Back in the ‘90s and early-2000s, denim skirts got a bad rap, particularly mini denim skirts. In the ‘90s, popular culture deemed the mini denim skirt as an overt sexualization of the female body. Later, as a reaction to this, the denim skirt was commonly paired with black leggings, which I found to be a grotesque fad and unflattering to every body type.
As of recent, an alternative to the mini denim skirt has been hitting the streets: the denim pencil skirt. Celebrity fashion icons, such as Rihanna, Kim Kardashian and Poppy Delevingne, have been pictured rocking the denim pencil skirt, fostering a fashionable quality to denim skirts that was missing in the early-2000s.
As we enter the middle of summer, the denim pencil skirt is the perfect casual clothing item, as opposed to a traditional pencil skirt. The denim allows the piece to be more versatile with daytime and nighttime looks. A traditional pencil skirt could not be this versatile due to its formal nature. In addition, because of the denim pencil skirt’s form-fitting shape and its high waist, it is easy to dress up. This Fashionista did just that! Here, she chose a white and neutral color palette, which is perfect for a summertime look. She elevates her look with a pair of nude heels, a long necklace and sunglasses. The use of a form-fitting crop top adds an aura of classy sexiness, which would not have been achieved with a loose-fitting blouse.
What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “The reason I love this skirt so much is because of its elegant edginess. It can be worn with a basic white tee for an eye-catching day look, or it can be matched with a pair of heels for a night out. Hanging on the rack, a piece like this may seem impractical, but personal style is all about knowing how to make the clothes work for YOU and your lifestyle!”
