ALL IN THE DETAILS: Hats Off (Or On?) To Summer

Well, folks it’s officially summertime and is it just me or has this summer already been abnormally hot? It makes me want to forget about all of my responsibilities, grab a couple cold ones and head to my favorite local beach spot on Sauvie Island. The summertime here in the Pacific Northwest is the absolute best because after many, many months of rain the skies open up to unveil luscious green grass and beautiful flowers that Mother Nature had been carefully watering all winter long. Portland has the perfect downtown to walk around with tons of little shops and weekend farmers’ markets on the waterfront so us Portlanders are always outside enjoying the sun when we can! Whether you’re walking around downtown or taking a drive down the Columbia River Gorge it’s important to stay cool and shaded from the sun.

This Fashionista is doing a perfect job at staying cool and stylish in her navy blue floppy felt hat. These babies aren’t just for the fall and winter months; they’re perfect for keeping your head cool while also adding style to your ensemble. I’m so happy that hats have become popular again because I think they really add character to an outfit. This Fashionista decided to base her color scheme off of her hat by choosing cool tones. She paired her hat with a white embroidered top, high-waisted destroyed boyfriend jeans which she rolled up into capris, a blue shawl cardigan and a pair of black sandals.

When choosing a hat, whether it be a beanie, baseball hat or a felt hat like the Fashionista rocks above it’s important to choose one that will complement your frame. I have a round face with chubby cheeks so baseball hats just don’t look right on me; however something not as form-fitting like a wide-brimmed fedora looks great. It’s important to know what looks good on you and what makes you look like the scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz.

How To: With this trend gaining popularity, there are tons of different styles and colors you can choose from! If you’re not digging the floppy hat perhaps a wide-brimmed fedora would be a little more up your alley. Whether you want to shade yourself from the sun or cover up a bad hair day, don’t be afraid to get outside your box a little and try out this trend for yourself.
