I stumbled across the Karen Walker ready-to-wear collection while browsing the www.Style.com spring 2015 trend report a few months ago. The show in its entirety was very well thought out and put together. The real showstopper for me was the featured canary yellow fabric with the black and white floral design. The designer created many interchangeable pieces using this fabric. As if showing a floral inspired print for spring at New York Fashion Week wasn’t already bold enough, the Karen Walker team decided to do it head to toe and in every style you can think of!
Coincidentally, a few weeks later while roaming the mall I came across a pair of white bootcut pants with a traditional floral print in greyscale. I could pair them with a simple black top and a pair of black heels or dare to add a pop of color and a touch of metallic like Karen Walker. Needless to say I have discovered that they were well worth the high ticket price. In fact, they have become a staple in my closet. I’ve received compliments on them every time I have worn them!
There was a vintage theme throughout the show reminiscent of the fashion period between the 1960s and 1970s. Karen Walker explained in an interview after the fact that she was greatly inspired by Valerie Finnis’ gardening culture in Britain in the 1970s. This thematic style element inspired me to add a few of my own vintage feminine touches to this week’s ensemble. The metallic handbag and belt, for example, added the perfect amount of sparkle and shine.
As I studied the rest of the collection I came across several pieces made in a burnt orange suede material. Personally, I am a huge fan of jewel tones. The richness of the pinks and oranges used throughout Karen Walker’s collection inspired me to take a step outside of my comfort zone while completing my outfit for this week. I chose the fuschia stilettos featured to add a pop of bright color inspired by the canary yellow used by Karen Walker.
