ALL IN THE DETAILS: Pocket Prints

When classic menswear seems to take on endless variations of black, navy and brown, a little graphic print can pull your outfit together and really distinguish it from the rest. A pocket print can express a load of personality in a unique, subtle and tasteful way. Of course, they’re not as daring or in-your-face as a graphic T-shirt, but that also means they open the door to more formal menswear. Because pocket prints can be dressed up or down with button-downs or T-shirts, they prove to be a versatile piece suitable for many occasions. In recent years, graphic designs and intricate prints on pockets have caused an explosion of popularity within the world of menswear.

Streetwear, surfing and skate apparel brands have put the spotlight on pockets with various prints ranging from camouflage to tropical blooms to geometric shapes. In particular, this Fashionisto’s pocket features a wicked design of sprawling octopi and helms of a ship. Personally, it is my favorite part of the outfit because it adds a great deal of visual interest and personality. The pocket acts as the perfect stylish touch to his entire outfit, which features a more formal cotton button-down and brown shorts. To make the outfit more summer appropriate, he rolls up the sleeves for a look that is simultaneously laid back and yet well put together. Additionally, he folds up the bottom of his shorts to reveal a light blue trim around the edge. The details of his clothing are incredibly color coordinated: the trim of his pants match his button-down, and the navy pocket matches his shoes. It is truly the details that can refine your outfit and take it to the next notch.

How to: Want to rock a pocket print? As long as you like the design, go for it. Even if the colors are loud or the print is bold and funky, remember that the design only takes up a small pocket—so the result is something that is still quite refined. Try to incorporate the colors on the pocket onto other elements of your outfit for a further accent.
