I don’t know about you, but the moment I think of “punk” I get flashes back to a very angsty Avril Lavigne circa 2004. You know, with the baggy cargo pants, plaid tie hanging loosely around her neck and eyeliner thicker than a hipster’s glasses. With that in mind you can probably understand why I’ve steered clear of the classic British subculture. However, flash forward to 2015 and you may be surprise to see a new spin on what was an explosion of rebellious, colored mohawks and piercings. So dust off your combat boots because punk is making a comeback.
The punk look has always been the epitome of self-expression ever since it first emerged in the mid-‘70s; the perfect excuse to unleash your inner rebel. That being said there are a million ways to achieve this punky vibe. The key is to keep things edgy, and when it comes to edgy a bold combat boot does the trick every time—you can’t go wrong with a pair of Dr. Martens! You’d be surprised to find how easily you can pair combat boots with an outfit. Whether it’s a ripped pair of white jeans, dark wash shorts or a flirtatious dress, by just adding boots you can take your look from cool to kick-butt!
This Fashionista decided to pair her boots with distressed tights and a flirty, floral dress. Using a dress and tights to soften the edge creates a pretty version of a seemingly hardcore look; ideal a college student who wants to take advantage of a versatile look. Adding lace and floral print also breaks up the leather in the boots emphasizing the Fashionista’s femininity without sacrificing any punky personality.
This Fashionista also uses layers to capture her punky side with a loose, utility blouse over her dress. By choosing to add a blouse she creates a more dynamic look that allows the print to be less overwhelming and more of an accent piece against the basic black of the blouse. She pulls her look together with graphic tote bag, thick framed glasses and some miscellaneous bracelets that personalizes the look as her own.
When it comes to punk, mixing things up with different contrasting pieces is the way to get that edge you’re looking for. After all, there’s nothing more punk rock than, well, punk!
What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Combat boots are my footwear of choice. Not only are they cute and edgy, but they are perfect for rain, shine or whatever else Mother Nature may have in store. You can dress them up or down too just by adding accessories. Don’t be afraid to take a risk when it comes to boots and accessories.”
