Everyone has an idea of what their ideal self would be like. It’s that image in your head when you think about yourself in a couple of years living out your most badass life imaginable while doing things like being on time for appointments (and not doing your makeup on the way there), writing thank you notes on cute stationary and waking up before noon. A girl can dream, right? My ideal version of myself has a wardrobe full of the 3.1 Phillip Lim fall 2015 collection and exclusively dresses like she walked off the set of The Craft.
Graphic T-shirts, flannel, leather jackets, dramatic layers and a sea of black was all part of the collection that embodies my grungy, punk-rock style dreams. Though 3.1 Phillip Lim may be a brand built around its polished and put-together looks, the brand’s 10th anniversary had designer Phillip Lim thinking of ways he could challenge the fashion world. What better way to push the envelope than to create a collection that embodies rebellion and chaos in itself? The collection has a very DIY, thrown together, punk-chic vibe that plays off the styles of the late ‘80s and ‘90s. The show itself was set to a mostly punk-rock soundtrack with the harsh cracking noise of a whip thrown in here and there to highlight the darker elements of the collection (I am swooning).
Since I’m working with more of a Forever 21 budget in my current life, I just took some inspiration from the runway and made it accessible for my everyday style. You can’t go wrong with a band T-shirt when trying to emulate a grunge look. This particular top has been in my closet since 2007 and has certainly seen better days, which makes it all the more authentic. I layered a Bklyn Noir caged bralette under the shirt to give it more depth and also incorporate the playful bondage aesthetic that is seen in the looks of the 3.1 Phillip Lim show. I also gave a nod to Phillip Lim’s more traditional look with an emphasis on shape and paired my top with a more structured, asymmetrical skort (yes, skort) from Urban Outfitters. I kept things minimalistic and grungy by adding a flannel shirt, my pair of beloved T.U.K. creepers and a plastic choker. Hello, ‘90s!
