The flouncy, flirty, twirly look just keeps making its way back to the runway decade after decade. What look am I talking about, you ask? Pleats, pleats and more pleats! The look made an appearance on just about everything this resort season from tops to dresses to skirts in the collections of Christopher Kane, Oscar de la Renta, Altuzarra, Christian Dior and Valentino. Buyers have been picking up on the fact that the feminine look is flattering on just about any silhouette, so they have been buying it like crazy. Now, pleats are a trend seen in every high end store you can think of in all colors, patterns and sizes. And, guess what? Fashion companies like Zara and Forever 21 are latching on to the trend for all of us broke college kids who want to try it out for ourselves.
My pleated look references my favorite collection of the resort 2016 season: Oscar de la Renta’s collection. It is my favorite collection because it highlights and embraces the contemporary working woman who Oscar de la Renta can dress to the summer occasion, whether it be a cocktail party, a day at the office or a casual Saturday on the town. I also appreciate that the collection utilizes a rainbow of colors, perfect for the summer season. Although my look is a little more muted than in the Oscar de la Renta collection, as my skirt is a pale pink and my top is cream colored, I captured the pleated look in my outfit in my own way with quieter colors, and so can you!
Just to prove to you that the pleated look has bounced back time after time, I pulled the skirt that I featured in this article out of my closet from the back of my closet as the last time I took it out for a spin was two to three years ago when I purchased it. I’m so glad I didn’t give this gem away. So, lesson learned? Think twice before you get rid of an article of clothing with some cool detail. You never know when it will be back in style!
