Shiny black things plus lots of metal hardware equal predictable…unless you’re a creative creature like Alexander Wang, whose fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection proves that even fashion’s most hackneyed ideas can be interpreted in the most ingenious of ways. Now close your eyes and imagine being a front row spectator, watching rich velvets, leathers and silks gleam before you. These threads, mixed with silver chains and studs, make for a gothic show.
Models walked down the runway with matted, wet hair and smudgy eye makeup—a somewhat grungy combination that seemed to be acceptable when accompanied by the various textures that characterized the all-black clothing. Heavy robes, double-breasted blazers and Lolita-esque dresses were paired with small handbags (which were, of course, leather and studded). All of the models wore combat boots with thick platforms. Underworld, indeed.
I translated Wang’s black on black theme to fit my own wardrobe, making a few adjustments here and there. Recognizing his keen use of leather, I tossed on my leather motorcycle jacket, hoping to allude to the tight-fitting leather bombers that so many of the models wore on the catwalk. My mid-length polyester skirt and black, lace-up boots allow me to maintain the black theme, but for a strong contrast, I’ve paired white crew socks and a white tank together. Keeping the hardware to a minimum, I wore a simple long-strand cross necklace.
Get My Look: 1. Black motorcycle jacket. 2. Black midi skirt. 3. Contrasting T-shirt or tank top to go under your killer coat!
