There’s no doubt that workout clothes are one of the biggest trends in casual wear this year. Whether it’s the rise of minimalist aesthetics or comfort in dressing, mixing sports gear into your everyday look creates a modern look with a dose of futuristic elegance. From mesh to spandex, you can find dresses, skirts and tops all in these wonderfully comfortable fabrics to mix and match for your next on-trend look.
Taking some advice from the summer’s predecessor, Stella McCartney’s collaboration with adidas for her spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection is a perfect sample of athletic styling for the summer. Her line incorporates classic silhouettes with each style but uses nylon and neoprene for a sporty twist. Who said that your gym clothes couldn’t be used to go out for the day?
The key to creating your sporty and elegant look is to use solid and monochrome details. With this daytime look, I stuck to shiny materials that have less glam and a more monochromatic effect. For accessories, I added my white Swatch and black studs to keep the tone neutral yet detailed. The adidas by Stella McCartney line is all about sleekness matched with pops of color; the use of black and white elements in my outfit draws attention to the bright yellow shell top.
Sometimes keeping your wardrobe up to date with trends can take a toll on you and your budget. The top I am wearing is an oversized vintage button-down and it looks like a more traditional piece when isolated. By mixing the thrifted shirt with Nike running shoes, leggings and some clear shades I was able to create a sportwear-inspired look. Taking pieces you have in your closet already and reinventing them is always a fun way to dress – plus it’s perfect if you’re still a student waiting for that Carrie Bradshaw-sized wardrobe. In the meantime, go ahead and repurpose your yoga class clothes on the daily—just make sure you’ve washed them first.
