Hello Fashionistas, my name is Silvia Dykstra. As you may already know, I love fashion and design, but here’s a little bit more about me. I was born and raised in Camp Zama, Japan. Camp Zama is a small military base located about an hour away from Tokyo. Thus, growing up I was able to visit one of the most populous and fascinating cities in world.
I had the unique opportunity to not only visit Tokyo frequently, but work there as well. The summer before I entered middle school, I decided to join a modeling agency. Through the modeling agency I was able to book several different modeling, as well as acting jobs. These jobs not only allowed me to travel all around Japan, but it also taught me what goes on behind the scenes during photo shoots and movie sets. Seeing all of the hard work and amazing talent (basically “magic”) that is put into creating fashion ad and or promotions, I realized that that was what I wanted to pursue.
Entering my junior year at the University of South Florida studying Public Relations, I am hoping to learn all the necessary tools and techniques to successfully promote and maintain a fashion company’s positive image. My ultimate goal is to work at a fashion magazine company in N.Y.C. (such as Marie Claire or Seventeen) and become an ambassador of that company in Japan. I know that my goal is very specific and a far stretch, I believe that anything is possible if you just keep trying and never give up.
Stores like Francesca’s and Ann Taylor are what inspire my day-today looks. I love to wear bright colors with simple patterns that aren’t distracting but make you feel warm. I believe that elegance is the most prized essence of style, thus I love to wear clothes that are simple and look effortlessly beautiful.
Being a college student myself, I know that we all may have a tight budget when it comes to spending money on clothing. Thus, I love finding hidden treasures at the local thrift stores like the Goodwill or the Salvation Army. It is not only fun but rewarding to know that you paid for a third or even a quarter of the original price. I actually bought the entire outfit that I am wearing right now from a thrift store in Japan. So with that, I can’t wait to write about the fashion styles and trends that are not only RAD but affordable for you all this fall semester.
