Denim is addicting: It’s easy, it’s simple, it’s stylish, it’s versatile, it evolves and it’s everywhere. The most revered style icons have it and people who use clothes simply for functionality have it. It can be slouchy, body-hugging, distressed or mixed with other fabrics. So, if it’s such a staple, why do so many denim outfits stand out and look stylish?
This Fashionista shows how to be creative with such a basic piece and how to add accents of one’s style in creative ways. She wears basic, minimalist pieces: a black sweatshirt with silver, sleek print blue jeans, Converse and a blue, leather backpack. The similar, inconspicuous shades of color and the play with textures is characteristic of a minimalist look. The white stripes on the denim add additional character to this minimalism because they lend an organized, sophisticated feel to it. If this Fashionista’s jeans had been severely distressed, I would have assumed her style was grunge. If they were bootleg, I would assume she liked vintage and was bold. Denim, although omnipresent, can have a lot of character to it—it’s worth experimenting with distressed, patched, ombré and patterned denim, and with different fits like mom jeans, skinny, boot leg or even denim dresses and jackets.
How to: There is a myriad of ways you could experiment with denim; for instance, I’ve recently seen a lot of embroidered denim in stores. This has a pastoral, bohemian feel to it, while being very classically Californian. It would look so great with an off-the-shoulder, boho top or even a slouchy sweater depending on your style. Alternately, you could try these patched jeans or even a patched, denim jumpsuit. Depending on your style, you could keep it simple of classic with a basic T-shirt, or you could make it louder with interesting textures, colors and prints.
