In 2011, I shamelessly watched the novel-based film, The Help, about 10 times. Apart from highlighting race relations circa 1963 in the heart of the rural South, the film showcased gorgeous ’60s clothing and quick-tongued banter between characters. In other words, there is always something new to analyze.
One of the most memorable scenes is when Skeeter, played by the lovely Emma Stone, attempts to disregard her mother’s fruitless attempts at finding her a husband. Unfortunately for Skeeter, her mother refuses to give up and orders her to take off her “Mexican man shoes,” or huaraches, for a more feminine look. Looking back, this scene parallels the debate I had with my mother over Birkenstocks: aka when the Ugly Shoe Trend invaded Casa Cortner.
At the beginning of this year, I went crazy over the easy-on, easy-off shoe. Not only do they offer ease to the always-in-a-hurry Fashionista/o, but they are the epitome of versatility. During my sophomore year, I have seen dresses, trousers, boyfriend jeans and shorts paired with Birkenstocks. These combinations are executed beautifully, leading me to question whether one of the prerequisites to wearing Birkenstocks is that you must be fashionable or if Birkenstocks endow the wearer with a cloak of style expertise.
This week’s Fashionista partnered sheer trousers with a solid pair of Birkenstocks. Mind you, this shoe comes in a variety of colors and patterns. However, with this all-black ensemble, a pair of black Birkenstocks completes the organic feel of the outfit. From this black, faux leather top to her trousers, the antidote for an Atlanta spring can be found in an open-toed shoe that won’t kill your feet on the way to exams.
While searching for the perfect pair to complete your spring outfits, riddle me this one: what came first, the Fashionista or the Birkenstock?
