When I first saw capes back on the runway, my first thought was the pink sequins monstrosity that I wore all through sixth grade. Capes sure have come a long way since the early 2000s, as they have evolved into such a sophisticated piece. They have become my favorite fall/winter accessory of the year. Capes are a great substitute for a sweater. They keep you warm and are a much more exciting piece. A great thing about this accessory is that it is available at every price point. From Nordstrom to ASOS, no one is excluded from this look. I’m not alone in my obsession either, since many notable bloggers have been seen utilizing this trend including my favorite, Blair Eadie of Atlantic-Pacific.
This fashionista layers her cape on top of a sweater and jacket to keep warm. She adds interest by mixing prints and colors. However, she keeps them all in the same color story so as not to clash. She completes the look with a beautiful constructed Kate Spade New York bag and a pair of short boots. This fashionista is proof that you can still be stylish without giving up warmth during winter.
How To: The great thing about capes is how versatile they are. They can be worn with a little black dress, jeans and a long sleeve shirt or with a blouse and skirt. Because of the bulk, keep the layers underneath it light for a more polished look. Also because a cape is such a bold statement, keep the accessories to a minimum.
