ALL IN THE DETAILS: Choke Up, Baby!

Let’s go back in history. How about 1798? The French Revolution sparked so many different trends in the fashion world that reflect on some current trends, such as the choker. Many of the women wrapped a red ribbon around their neck to pay homage for those who died at the guillotine. From then on, chokers reappeared throughout history among various economic classes and professions. Now that we got our history lesson on chokers, let’s return to the modern times, the ’90s. Celebrities from Christina Aguilera to Britney Spears to Gwyneth Paltrow were seen wearing them at red carpets, premieres and concerts.

The ’90s resurrection on runways brought back a long-lived accessory to 2016. Fast fashion retailers currently provide a range of styles for the choker. Do you want a small-to-large lace choker? A Satin or leather choker? A Layered choker? A Ribbon choker? You can find any type of choker you like to fit any personality or style.

Beatriz Safie, my cousin and roommate, is a true lover of chokers. She has a small jewelry box full of them. Today, she is wearing her ultimate favorite choker, a simple, thin leather choker. This choker can be so versatile. Want to wear it for a night out downtown? Pair it with a low neckline dress and some flashy heels. Want to wear it to class like Beatriz did? Combine some black mid-rise distressed jeans with a poplin structured white top and of course, some black leather sneakers. Some extra accessories in her outfit were gold rings, the Hermes bracelet and her Louis Vuitton Neverfull handbag for school. To protect herself from the sun, she added a little color to the outfit with some Illesteva Leonard tortoise with pink mirrored lens sunglasses.

Make sure to keep your outfit simple so the choker will be the center of attention. Based off your personality, choose a choker that describes your style. Wide velvet choker or thin lace choker? Get creative!
