ALL IN THE DETAILS: Claddagh Necklace

In terms of jewelry, there are essentially only two groups of metals: silver or gold. People will categorize themselves in terms of these metals because they prefer one to the other. Did you know that there is an actual scientific way to tell whether silver or gold is your metal? If your skin has cool undertones, your metal is silver. Likewise, if your skin has warm undertones, your metal is gold. However, if you are able to successfully rock both metals, I say keep doing you and forget about science.

These days, a large statement necklace seems to be quickly making its way into every girl’s wardrobe. What struck me about this particular Fashionista was her unique dainty claddagh necklace. First of all, I have never seen a gold claddagh anything, let alone necklace. Although the necklace was delicate looking, the gold necklace was put in contrast to the medium gray mid-length sweater dress. This produced a bold look without the need for a frivolous necklace.

Gray, bordeaux and black are the three main colors incorporated into this Fashionista’s outfit. The bordeaux-colored hat matches the striped socks, and the socks also match the gray sweater. Gold is used to add accent to the dark lenses, and the dark lenses match the plain black leggings. This Fashionista was able to incorporate color into her outfit without taking away from the statement of the claddagh necklace.

When I asked the Fashionista about the origins of the necklace, she told me it was her grandmother’s, who unfortunately passed away when the Fashionista was five years old. Fashion does not only connect us to the present with the latest trends, it is also able to connect us to the past. No mater which metal you choose to label yourself, keep in mind a future generation could be wearing your necklace one day.

How To: First, pick three key colors to incorporate into your outfit. Then, grab your favorite cold weather accessories, sweater and small necklace in those colors. Pair the articles together by putting cool and warm tones against one another. Voilà!
