Would you ever use leather and sophisticated in the same sentence? I don’t even think the queen of the Upper East Side, Blair Waldorf, would allow it. Is leather clothing sophisticated or is it just for those who can name five Rolling Stones albums? Are Rolling Stones fans not sophisticated? So many questions.
One thing I’m sure about, though, is that there are no real rules in fashion. I’m a fan of mixing pieces of clothing that seem like they wouldn’t necessarily go together because how predictable is it to wear a leather skirt and a Guns N’ Roses T-shirt? Very. Where leather meets prep, you’ve got unexpected and somehow it absolutely works.
This Fashionista is rocking the hell out of a wine-colored pleated leather skirt, but no Guns N’ Roses shirt or Jeffrey Campbell booties in sight. Instead, she opted for a much more preppy striped boat neck sweater and brown sandals with a chunky heel to complete this clean look.
I’m obsessed with the pleats in the skirt because the structured style goes so well with such a classic sweater, but the fact that it’s leather instantly boosts the wow factor. This look, while simple, is all about the details. The front tuck, the pleats, and the boat neck perfectly create a look made of just two pieces that say more than enough.
The horizontal navy stripe is such a staple in a preppy closet, and no, I don’t mean “Hollister preppy.” The different lines in the look also give the eye more to look at and the chunky heeled sandals keep the outfit from becoming too serious.
Maybe it’s a long shot, but I truly believe even Blair Waldorf would approve of this outfit. Let’s not bring out the headbands, though.
