Time and time again, a major dilemma when it comes to being a Fashionista is trying to figure out just how exactly to make an outfit pop. For a lot of women out there, statement pieces are a really amazing and grandiose tool meant to be eye-catching and luring. Usually, statement pieces are known to be items such as jewelry, scarves and purses, just to name a few. But what would happen if I were to say that for this Fashionista, her true statement piece is growing right out of her very own head? Yes, you read that correctly—her hair!
Natural hair is a movement within the black community where women of color are debunking mainstream perceptions of beauty and “transitioning” or chopping off their chemically relaxed hair, in favor of growing out and embracing their natural curly to kinky hair textures. We’ve seen this emerging movement within women of the media such as the likes of the iconic Solange, rockstar Janelle Monae and the ever-classy Tracee Ellis Ross. These women really know just how to use their hair as focal points for their outfits, and now, we see it here with our very own Fashionista!
With her afro flourishing, this Fashionista decides to take the bold route and wears a spring-time floral print within the midst of winter. The juxtaposition of both flowers and snow manages to blend in together nicely, without being too over the top. Keeping up with the feel of spring within winter, our Fashionista decides to keep the rest of the outfit to a more simple consistency by choosing to rock a plain white tank top underneath her blazer. Don’t worry, the weather wasn’t cold at all that day; I can attest! Some of the shocking things about UConn’s weather is the fact that we actually can have nice days, and this Fashionista was definitely using it to her advantage. The thing that I like about the added necklace is the fact that it simply complements the attire rather than take away from it. Each piece is still making a statement, yet they are all highlighting one another in a cohesive manner. All in all, with her beautiful Afro showcased, this look is giving off a very retro and classy vibe!
How To: Our hair is the very extensions of ourselves, and though it may come as a surprise to most people, it can actually be used as one of our best accessories. Want to imitate this look? Try a definitive hairstyle that adds personality and color to your style. Try and be bold, as well, with patterns and colors that are not normally worn within winter. Although, in the cases of cold weather, instead of a tank top try a turtleneck or sweater instead!
