“What have you done that’s brave today?” One of those haunting quotes that always reminds me that I need to get out of my comfort zone more often, speak up for myself and take risks. No more shying away in the back of the classroom when the professor asks for volunteers, no more refraining from giving my opinion on controversial Facebook posts about whether or not women deserve the right to vote, no more striped shirt, black leggings, black ankle bootie combos.
You heard me. My tried and true winter-spring-summer-fall go to is not brave. It doesn’t take risks. It only takes me back to my Catholic grade school when uniforms were actually mandatory and I dreamed of wearing edgy band T-shirts and black nail polish. Look at what I’ve done with this freedom of college and wearing what I want. It’s time to get out of my ruts and be brave. It’s time to experiment with ascots.
This Fashionista gets it. There’s a simple ease of pairing black jeans and booties with a jean jacket, allowing her ascot and graphic T-shirt to shine through. While this outfit looks tailored and put together, she could easily pull this on in a few swift minutes before class or an impromptu shopping trip. What makes it work is that the colors of the T-shirt match the ascot almost perfectly. They were born to be together. They’ll grow old together and reminisce over their past lives in the rose garden drinking tea as they watch the dusk settle in. Timeless? Yes. Boring? Absolutely not.
Ascots are great for when it’s just a bit chilly out and you’re getting used to the idea of winter. They’re the training bra of scarves. This is also one of the few times of the year where you can comfortably wear an ascot without overheating or getting frostbite. Embrace this beautiful two week grace period as the seasons change. Ascots are also a great way to memorialize the true fashion icon Daphne from Scooby Doo.
Be brave my sunflowers, remember the women before you and wear the little scarf.
