If there’s one thing we know in the Midwest, it’s how to tackle winter! Us Midwesterners truly take pride in our familiarity with below freezing temperatures, as well as our lake shores! While visiting Grand Haven State Park in Grand Rapids, I shot with a Fashionista who perfectly balanced a cozy winter look with her Michigan pride.
The layers and details of this look pull it all together. Huge winter coats like this one from The North Face are a must, especially on this 29 degree day on the Lake Michigan coast. Layered beneath is a classic Patagonia fleece. Compensating for her warm top half, slightly distressed jeans add a fashionable tinge to the overall look. Tall boots, such as this pair from UGG, add traction for the ice brought on by the waves, while invisible beneath them are thick wool hiking socks to keep her toes warm. As with most Michiganders, she has a ton of state pride which is effectively hidden throughout this outfit. While keeping her hands warm in mittens, she is sporting the layout of the whole state, connecting the lower half and upper peninsula of Michigan with her two hands. She also keeps home close to heart with her tiny sterling silver necklace shaped like Michigan itself, which she wears every day.
This outfit proves that you can heavily layer without bulk, while also being able to add detail and personal meaning to your outfit. Cafes and souvenir shops line downtown Grand Rapids, while the lake is just a short walk away. This outfit works for all—shopping, exploring, and sightseeing outdoors. If you’re ever in the Midwest during the winter months, layer up and use tricks like these mittens and socks to keep yourself toasty while still showing off your style!
