ALL IN THE DETAILS: Mixing and Matching

After hearing the infamous Punxsutawney Phil announce six more weeks of winter, college students everywhere dropped their hopes of warm weather and continued to layer up in order to beat the remainder of the harsh winter. Even without looking at people’s faces on campus, you can tell who’s totally over the cold. The typical drab, dark winter colors- black, gray, white- are found on pretty much every student (myself included) in order to project our strong feelings to the world. Okay, I might be exaggerating a little, but my words do hold a bit of truth in them. While I admit to wearing dark outfits throughout the winter, it’s refreshing to see a student on campus shining in bright colors and mix-matched patterns.

The first piece that attracted my eye to this Fashionista was her plaid pants. As a fan of all things plaid, I approached her, only then noticing her choice to pair her pants with a blue and white striped sweater. This Fashionista did not stop there! Her abstract scarf, green military jacket and green Dr. Martens also intrigued me. Personally, when I wear something bold, I tone down the rest of my outfit in order for the focal point to be on the one item, but I love the fact that this student was not intimidated by mixing patterns and colors and the result was successful!

How To: In order to imitate this Fashionista’s look, don’t be intimated by wearing two or more stand out pieces! Wearing patterned pants doesn’t mean they have to be toned down with monochromatic shirts- and vice versa! Experiment with different patterns and find what suits you the best!
