ALL IN THE DETAILS: Monochro-magic

Early spring is filled with nothing but temperamental weather. While more and more days are starting to feel like the perfect canvas for bright sundresses and washed denims, some days are still gray for both our skies and our outfits. It can be hard to pull off all-black without looking whack, so let’s learn a couple of tips from this Fashionista about how to soften up our monochrome ensembles with some subtle but striking details.

Being one color doesn’t mean you have to be boring. On the contrary, keeping a simple color palette allows you significantly more freedom to mix patterns, silhouettes and fabrics. I was instantly captivated by our Fashionista’s printed leggings, a trend that can be hard to work into an outfit. Our Fashionista layers her leggings with a flowy black sundress instead of a regular T-shirt, countering the geometric lettering on her leggings with the flirty skirt of the dress. The extra length on the sundress is perfect under her woven cardigan, creating just enough padding between the sweater and her leggings that the two pieces complement each other instead of clash. She keeps her accessories simple: the high neckline of her dress and oversized sleeves on her cardigan make a necklace or bracelets unnecessary, so a pair of colorful but small earrings, and some combat boots complete her look without crowding it with details.

Last but certainly not least, this Fashionista reminds us that just because your outfit is monochromatic, doesn’t mean your look has to be. Her colorful hair and bright red lipstick keep her looking playful in any color.

How To: Monochrome often means black and white, but it doesn’t have to! To bring the monochromatic trend into spring, pick a color and roll with it by selecting pieces in different shades of that color and breaking up large chunks of color with well-placed accessories.
