The ’70s, or the “Me Decade” as described by Tom Wolfe, was a time of increased individualism that continued on from the late ’60s. This was especially seen in the way people put together outfits. There was a significant amount of peasant tops, high boots, bell-bottoms and crazy tie-dye (well, who doesn’t love a nice, comfy tie-dye T-shirt). I am still not over the final episode, End of an Era, of the amazing show Mad Men, and naturally, I am left wanting for more 1970s fashion. So, when I spotted this Fashionista sporting a psychedelic hippie top, I could not resist fawning over her amazing outfit.
The main “hippie” characteristic of the outfit seems to be the solid top with flared out sleeves. What I love are the little crisscross details below the shoulder and the way the fabric opens up at the palms into a bell-bottom look. Here is a similar sheer peasant top that can be easily paired with the same pieces. This Fashionista decided to go for an all-black look with a slim jean—a detail that I always tend to love—but added pops of color in her shoes and accessories. The pops of color are the epitome of the groovy vibes of the ’70s with high platforms and the printed backpack. This is an easy way to break the monochromatic feel of a solid outfit. Plus, this gives you the liberty to have some fun with color! Both the backpack and shoes have the same range of purples, pinks and metallic hues.
How To: First, look into thrift stores and vintage stores because you are bound to find pieces from that exact era if you look hard enough. You can also take any simple silhouette and pair it with really high platforms to give it a disco ’70s look while keeping it chic. As a fellow Fashionista, taking those staple looks from a noticeable decade and tailoring them to a wearable outfit for the modern day are ways in which you can have fun channeling your inner Brigette Bardot!
