ALL IN THE DETAILS: Sassy in Suede

I have preached many times before about how fashion is constantly evolving. That is not to say, however, that once a style fades from the spotlight it disappears forever. This is far from reality, actually. Styles ebb and flow through generations and over decades, always picking up new styles and leaving some behind. Once people think a trend has disappeared, however, it tends to suddenly reappear in a different form. This is seen today with the bold style of the ’70s.

The ’70s were known for hippie style with the characteristically bright colors, flared jeans, and suede, well, everything! These are the exact fashions that are spreading like wildfire today. When I look around on campus, scattered among the sea of black yoga pants and sweatshirts are those sporting subtle ’70s styles. This Fashionista is one of them!

This Fashionista showed off a huge style that has come back from the past in full swing: suede. In the ’70s, people used suede to make just about every part of their outfits, from pants to vests to accessories. Nowadays, suede is seen most commonly in skirts and shorts, like this Fashionista. She chose a brown, suede skirt paired with a simple black top that would not overwhelm the intricate detail of the skirt. She then picked a pair of lace-up black flats that add a great finishing touch to the overall outfit. One way to take this outfit to the next level, especially if you live in an area colder than South Carolina, is to add a faux fur vest or jacket to give the look a modern touch.

Many people tend to look to the past for style inspiration. Now, I am not saying we should necessarily bring back corsets and hoop skirts, but finding little details like the color blocking of the ’80s and suede of the ’70s is a great way to develop a new modern day style with a touch of history.
