Spring in Ohio this semester has been gentle; whereas I remember preparing myself for the “polar vortex” winter my freshman year, 2017 has proven to be much milder, weather-wise. It’s about two months into the second term and the consistent 40 degree days have brought about some of the most interesting fashion choices. I must admit, this Fashionista’s outfit seems more appropriate for a spring/summer NYFW attendee than a liberal arts student in rural Ohio, but the abnormally warm winter makes anything acceptable.
I would have never thought to pair DIY jeans with Nike Free Run tennis shoes and an ankle length fur collar coat. Even in parceling out this Fashionista’s look on paper, it’s hard for me to conceptualize all of these various pieces contributing to a stylish, cohesive outfit. However, the ankle fringe jeans contrast nicely with the angle-winged, off-the-shoulder top to create a look that is contemporary and feminine. The casual, sporty nature of the sneakers paired with the luxe faux fur collar complicates the outfit in a way that gives it boldness and intensity.
As if this ensemble weren’t impressive enough, after talking with this Fashionista, I learned that her look is full of DIY elements. She revives the vintage, thrifted jeans with hand-painted stripes and details on the front calf and back pockets. By using tape and acrylic paint, she was able to add color and personality to the light wash Levi’s. As well, her choker necklace and sunglasses are both handmade by Manhattan-based Susan Alexander who designs one of a kind jewelry and accessories.
