ALL IN THE DETAILS: The Long Way

When leggings first came back in style, I invested in a lot of extra large sweaters and too big, draping shirts so I could wear them but still feel covered up. This often resulted in me looking like I was wearing a large blanket instead of a top, all in the name of comfort and modesty. However, that was a few years ago and since then, designers have come up with many better options that keep you covered, comfortable and confident while wearing leggings.

This Fashionista paired her leggings with a plaid button-up that is slightly longer in the back than it is in the front. This kind of shirt was made for leggings. The long hemline in the back turns what would have originally been a masculine work shirt into a feminine cover up. The extra fabric gives the illusion that while this is a shirt, it could also be a dress. She finished off her outfit with a gray V-neck, army green jacket, a pair of Dr. Martens and a tan purse that is big enough to hold her books and laptop. This look lets her stay modest without looking like she’s wearing a tent.

I’ve seen shirts with uneven hemlines all over campus this winter. Whether it’s a sweater, a lightweight top or a plaid button-up, they’re a great way to make sure you’re staying covered while wearing leggings.

How To: Leggings and a shirt with an uneven hem are great options for just about any occasion. Pair them with sturdy boots for walking around campus like this Fashionista did or go with a smaller black bootie for a fancier affair.
