A good ensemble looks past trends and looks to personal style. A great ensemble doesn’t leave a body part unornamented. Yes, folks, it’s all about the details. To give you a general idea of what I mean here by “detail” think body chains, toe rings, hats, bags, scarves, prints, textures, body decals, lipstick, hair accessories, necklaces, arm cuffs, glasses, etc. Basically, you get the point and okay, so the store clerk didn’t notice you switched out your hoops for your pearl studs and mixed navy with black so effortlessly well. So what? That’s ONE set of the hundreds of eyes that will see you in one day. Don’t let an overlooked detail discourage the small efforts, as the details are meant to be humble beings that give an unspoken gesture of unity to your outfit.
And as she does so effortlessly, this Fashionista embodies the word details from head to toe. Everything about her was prim, proper, fresh and girly from the bow tied up on her dress to her polka-dot pointed toe slingbacks. She mixed natural materials of wicker wood and straw with preppy patterns and prints. She toted around a quirky picnic basket that she rocked as a handbag (hello, inventive). Inside her basket were everything from aviator sunnies to a spare change of earrings, but most noteworthy she carried around two books that complemented her outfit flawlessly. Not so surprising coming from a Fashionista like herself. The book almost purposefully mimicked the look of her A-line dress which was characterized by its candy stripes of princess pink and white. To balance the flush of pinks she wore a finely woven straw hat just a step below Kentucky Derby standards. Her jewelry and makeup were subtle statements but of the two she knew where to appropriately place the emphasis. For instance, a Kim K size rock because it sat alone on her hands and a fuschia lip turned the saturation up on the pink hue.
While it’s not always as effortless as it is for others, being detail oriented isn’t hard to do. Take an extra five to ten minutes to focus on accentuating different elements of your outfit through the use of accessories.
How To: You can imitate this look with a couple simple steps. If you don’t already have a striped dress, get a flowing sundress to imitate the one featured here. Grab a uniquely shaped bag whether it’s meant to function as a purse or not (the “or not” part is where it can get fun!). Don’t forget to add statement jewelry to give it a polished (and never tacky) look. From there, get creative and play around with details that match your individual style!
