“Do what you love” is a widely popular phrase in our digital age, and it has taken up a bigger meaning for those going into creative fields. While most people are afraid to take risks, Austin Marc is not one of them. Rather than sitting at home dreaming of ways to make music, Austin decided to make the move to New York City and enroll as a Music Production student. Now, in the mecca of all things food, fashion and music, he is pursuing his dreams of becoming a producer.
Name: Austin Marc
Role: Aspiring Music Producer/ Music Production Student
CollegeFashionista: What inspires you to make music?
Austin Marc: I’d say the Internet and the culture that surrounds it influences me the most. Like everyone else, I live on Twitter and Instagram and spend a lot of time on blogs searching for new music, and that inspires me a lot of the time. It sounds cliché, but I am just attempting to put out music that is different than everyone else. A majority of new music, especially in the Hip-Hop and R&B genres, all sound very similar, and while I do love it, it is refreshing to find a new artist or producer that is making an effort to make something different. Those are the people that inspire me.
CF: How does living in New York City influence your style and the music you make?
AM: Living in Manhattan has definitely influenced my style and the music that I’ve been making. On the days that I don’t have class, I put my headphones in and take a D train downtown from Harlem and just walk around or meet a friend for coffee or catch a movie. Then, when it starts getting late, I head back to my place and then work from midnight till like 6 and then wake up around 2 in the afternoon and do it all over again. All of those times just hanging out, walking around and having the opportunity to truly focus on the music that I was listening to is super beneficial for me. The main influence that NYC has had on me, as far as style goes, is the tightness of my jeans.
CF: Who do you look up to for style inspiration?
AM: As far as style goes, I guess I’d say I look up to Kanye. I wear most of the same clothes. I wear the same two or three pairs of jeans and either a pair of Bapes or my Comme des Garçons and a black T-shirt.
CF: If you had to pick one item in your closet that tells us the most about you, what would you pick?
AM: I love my black long-sleeve Alexander Wang shirt because although it is hip and cool because it is Wang, it ALWAYS has my cat’s fur all over it which always reminds me of my home in New Jersey.
