In New York City, going to school to study fashion design isn’t uncommon, and it can be difficult to ground yourself in such a competitive industry. Students can lose themselves in the stress, competition and intensity of the fashion world, but this Fashionista, a senior studying fashion design, just finished her final collection and is looking fabulous donning a classic black and navy get-up with a black pleather jacket, black hat, black boots and a peplum top with denim. has shared with me her visions and ideas behind her collection and aesthetic that prove her passion and clarity as a designer.
Name: Clara Cheung
Role: Student Designer
CollegeFashionista: What inspires you as a designer?
Clara Cheung: I really like conceptual fashion, streetwear and clothing that looks chic but also comfortable. I think comfort is the most important thing when it comes to clothing but pieces should also be flattering of course. When I think of my customer, I want her to be able to wear my clothes and stand out while feeling unique and cool.
CF: What are the themes in your latest collection?
CC: My senior year collection is based on the Japanese term Hikikomori which refers to the phenomenon of people in Japan who stay isolated at home and withdrawn from society. The collection was inspired by their social anxiety and a sense of cleanliness. It features a lot of white, silver and blue and a clean feel. I drew inspiration from images of laboratories as well and how they are so clean and white.
CF: Who are your style icons?
CC: Mostly bloggers! I love Jenn Im of Clothes Encounters and Eugénie Grey of Feral Creature.
CF: What is your ultimate goal in the fashion world?
CC: I plan on staying in the city as its the epicenter of the fashion world and maybe starting my own brand. I would love to also work with VFiles!
