Many people have a love for fashion and music but not all people are able to combine the two to create a fashionable wardrobe. As Roberto Cavalli has said, “I love clothes and fashion more than music.” Well, what happens to the people who love them both the same? In comes John Andoh-Kesson who has combined his two loves to create his fashionable line, Lavish Notes. This self-taught fashion designer has just begun his journey and is excited to see where he ends up. I have to say, I can’t wait either!
Name: John Andoh-Kesson
Role: Fashion Designer, Lavish Notes
CollegeFashionista: When did you develop your interest in fashion design?
John Andon-Kesson: I started developing this love a few years ago when I really started paying attention to what music artists were wearing. I would watch the Grammys not only hoping to see my favorite artists win, but also to see what they were wearing. I would watch these award shows from beginning to end. I had to see what they were wearing on the Red Carpet.
CF: When did it click for you to start combining music and fashion?
JAK: Over the summer. I took a summer course and I was walking around campus with my headphones in, suddenly it clicked that I could design clothes based on my favorite songs. Whatever I felt internally while listening to that song I was just going to start designing based on that internal feeling.
CF: Is there any artist in particular you look to for music and fashion inspiration?
JAK: Oh, definitely. There are a few, but my favorite would have to be Pharrell. He’s got it all. Musical talent and fashion sense. I aspire to be like him.
CF: What are your goals for your line?
JAK: I really just want everyone to like it and want to wear it. I’m doing a lot of advertising on campus and it would be great to look around and see everyone wearing something from my line.
CF: What do you think about the fashion you see around campus?
JAK: There’s a lot of diversity on campus and with that comes different styles: I love it. I love that there are so many different styles going on around me and I can just look at everyone and be inspired. There are no limits to what people wear around here and that’s one thing I love about this campus.
